OPEN HOUSE MEETING ON THE ERADICATION PLANS AGAINST THE WHITE STRIPED FRUIT FLY DETECTED IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
The white striped fruit fly (WSFF), a serious new insect pest in California, has been detected in your area. The WSFF is an exotic insect that is native to tropical southeast Asia. The WSFF attacks the fruit of many trees, most significantly guava and mango. Damage occurs when the female lays eggs in the fruit. These eggs hatch into larvae, or maggots, tunneling through the flesh of the fruit as they feed. Decay organisms enter, leaving the interior of the fruit a rotten mass, making it unfit for consumption. This is the first time WSFF has been detected in the Western Hemisphere. Therefore, emergency eradication and quarantine action is needed to protect California from the negative economic and environmental impacts the establishment of this pest would cause throughout California.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture consulted with scientists who are experts in the biology of this pest. These experts have helped us formulate a treatment plan designed to eradicate the infestation.
Beginning on August 1, 2009, CDFA will begin male attractant treatments to eradicate this invasive pest. This treatment consists of placing traps (bait stations) with cotton wicks containing a formulation of a small amount of a pesticide and a male attractant lure (naled and cuelure) in trees within the eradication area. In addition, because a breeding population exists, limited ground treatments with a formulation of an organic pesticide will be applied to the foliage of trees within 200 meters of all properties where WSFF have been detected.
Residents of properties scheduled for treatment (traps or ground treatment) will be notified prior to the application. Click here for a map outlining the eradication area. Click here for a WSFF pest profile.
To inform you of planned activities, residents of the affected areas are invited to attend an open house meeting on Thursday, July 30, 2009, between the hours of 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm at:
The Hillcrest Retirement Community Meeting House 2705 Mountain View Drive La Verne, CA 91750.
At this meeting, cooperating agency officials will provide information and answer questions about the program.
Your cooperation with this program is needed to rid California of this harmful invading pest while it is still possible. If you cannot attend this important meeting and require additional information, please contact the toll-free PEST HOTLINE at (800) 491-1899 for further assistance. |
